Starting School Again

Been awhile since I've posted... been really really busy. Mainly because of my internship.  But that has finally ended and college started again.  I didn't get to work on a lot of personal stuff over the summer because I was gone from 8a.m - 8p.m every day.  I would animate all day at work and only have a few hours at night to animate some more. Very tiring.

Anyways, I wanna post up some of the stuff I got done over the summer.
Here's my shot from the animation summer arts class with Rex.
My assignment was to have a character look at a box and go from feeling confident to insecure.  It was very tough but I got to learn a lot about acting.

After learning a bit about dialogue from Rex at summer arts, I was very excited to give it a shot again.  I've been working on this one in my free time over the summer. I've learned A LOT from working on this and I'm ready to move onto something else now and apply everything.

I'm so happy that school is back in session. I finally have a character animation class.  I will be working hard on that as well as another online character animation class.  It's going to be a great semester.  I only have classes 3 days a week so I have SOOOO much time to work on personal projects.

This August marks a year since I've taken animation seriously.  My first iAnimate class was August of last year.  I'm really proud of where I've gotten in a year.  I can't wait to see where I am as an animator when I graduate in spring 2014.

It's time!

The semester is finally over. Time to start back on my animation projects full force! Need to prepare before my 2 weeks Dreamworks Animation class in July. I just got accepted this week! 2 full weeks of just acting and animating with Dreamworks for like 8+ hours each day. Can't. Wait.

So yeah, gonna compile a list of things I will be doing before then.

•Finish finisher #2 animation
•Practice exit animations
•Do some lead in attacks animations
•51 animation exercise project
•Fix up some of the best shots on my demo reel (maybe)
•Practice acting animation (Going to be copying Tangled scenes just so I can get a feel for it)
•Practice my own acting animations (Got quite a few sound clips that I wanna try out)

Should be ready with all of this... as well as working full time at Liquid! :D Which is going really well.

Time to get working! And relaxing! It's been crazy.

No rest for the animator!

Here we go, project #22. Just messing around with another attack. I wanted to go for more of an attack you would see ingame.. rather than something showy for a demo reel.  Here's an attack that would require like 3 button presses for this 3 hit combo. Just practicing for this one, don't think it'll be something I will put on my demo reel.

I really need more practice on exit and settle animations. I think that's one thing that I am missing from my animations to help sell the shot. When I see other reels with awesome weighty exits and settles.. damn, I wish I could do that. So I'll be finishing up another finisher soon then work purely on exit and settles. I'll just look at a bunch of combat references and do the last part of the hit and into the settle. Can't wait to start on those... and can't wait for this semester to be over. Then I'll have more time!

After that, gonna try and attempt this.... http://www.animatorisland.com/51-great-animation-exercises-to-master/

That's gonna be so hard! But I need to do this to prepare myself for the summer class that I am taking which will be a two week acting and expression class taught by DreamWorks Animation. Gonna need to do an acting shot again before that too. Class starts July 1st. 2 months away.. CAN'T WAIT!!

Internship has been great so far as well. Learning a lot and practicing more animation :) Finally got to see my stuff in a game for the first time. A very rewarding feeling. Especially being a student still :) But holy crap am I busy... School on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and internship on Tuesday and Wednesday.. And finals are coming up.. ugh.

Hard to find time to animate my own personal stuff, but I need to keep practicing. Never give up!

End of iA and INTERNSHIP!

So iA ended last week.... It's always very sad when it comes to an end. I miss getting reviews from my mentors and watching the lectures.  Kevin Rucker was an amazing mentor and I have learned A LOT in WS2.  I will be taking a break from iA and not take WS3 just yet. I am disappointed because Michael Carr from SCEA Santa Monica Studios was going to teach that class but there wasn't enough students so they decided to cancel it.  Blah... but it's okay, I really need the break.

Though its not going to be a break at all because I did get an internship at Liquid Entertainment! I am really happy that I got this gig.  They work in 3DS Max and I haven't even touched that program yet, but the more I am learning about it, the more I am liking it.  I have a feeling my workflow for animating will slow down a bit but hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon.

So yeah, I got school that I need to get through.. and now, I'll be at the studio on my days off.  So Sunday is the only day I actually have off. Plus I joined an indie development team working on an FPS game, set to be releasing next month on Steam's Greenlight. SO BUSY!!!!!

But I am LOVING it all. My dream is finally coming to fruition. Hard work is finally paying off. I am still very far from it though so I'm definitely not going to stop.

I've had a few people review my demo reel such as my mentors, and the senior animators at Riot, as well as friends. I see what they are saying and yeah, I do need a lot of work on it.

More dynamic poses, get those "box cover" poses to show, better timing, spacing, issues with popping, animations are too pose to pose, need to be smoother, animations need to show more character, animations need to be polished to the max, and the list goes on.

So I'll be taking a break this summer from WS3 and will be working on my animation and polishing up my demo reel.. TO THE MAX. And I think I will make this demo reel, non-rendered. Kevin Rucker was right...

"There's no big secret to making a great demo except great animation. The rendering, music, title cards, etc don't matter. ONLY great animation matters."

I was really too worried about making that stuff look nice and all rendered out and that I didn't put enough time in my actual animation.  So yeah, I plan to polish my strongest pieces on my demo reel, and do other different shots, that show a lot of character. And hopefully some cinematic type stuff. AND NO MORE RENDERING! NO MORE! I'll render stuff out again when I'm a super badass animator that's worthy of having shit rendered.

Going to be one busy and awesome summer. :)

Animation Project #19,20,21

So this past week, drove all the way up to San Francisco for the Game Developer Conference which took 6-7 hours. I had a pretty good time there but I mainly went there to meet with Riot Games. I actually got a rejection letter from them the day before for their summer internship. I wanted to go so I could show the actual animators my demo reel and get their thoughts and opinions on it. Alex and Tomas literally spent 30 minutes with my critiquing every shot on my demo reel. It was awesome. I've learned so much and I know what I need to focus on next.

Really wished that I could've gotten the internship though because I've grown so much and I am confident that I would have been ready by summer. It sucks being a student because its so hard to get in this game industry. Internships is really all I got, and it feels like even those are harder to get into. I'm still stumped on what sort of skill level they require. Still got a few more internships to hear back from.

Here's the animation projects I've been working on that I've added to my demo reel.

#19

#20

#21

#21 was a Hyuna's Bubble Pop dance that I did for fun to show to Riot since I know they love dances. They have awesome ones for every one of their characters.

We are coming up on our last week at iAnimate. Working on our finisher move. I was so scared of this assignment because it's my first time working with two characters at once. But after I started, it wasn't so bad. I'm really really happy with how it turned out. Things are starting click. I'm starting to understand weight, balance, and timing. It's amazing to see how far I've come.

Thank god it's spring break this week, I get so much time to animate! So after this finisher, I'm working on another Lisa attack that's more game oriented, and gonna work on a few more finishers cause they are just so fun to do. So here's what I got. Done in 2 days.

Will be rendering this tonight and slap it on my demo reel :)

Until next time... working my ass off. Keys and breakdowns all day everyday! Also just signed up for another online animation training class later this fall, focused on feature animation. I cannot wait! I wasn't able to do this months 11SC competition because I had no time. But I really need to start practicing again. Disney's internship deadline is coming up soon.... Maybe I can do ONE super amazing shot to send in.

Update

Just wanted to post some updates of what I'm working on. Currently polishing my demo reel and getting more shots to add to it. Hopefully I'll be done next week and have a more awesome demo reel to show :)

I'm up to animation project #18 now which is a injured walk cycle. I was inspired by Tomb Raider's Lara Croft's injured jog cycle when playing the same so I just had to try and make one. Definitely thought it was going to be a lot harder since I havn't done a walk cycle in a while, but I got this done in about 2 hours. Will be rendering and adding it to my demo reel.

I didn't post up #16 and #17 but they were my Redback attack and my Lisa spinning sword attack that's shown in my current demo reel.

Also posting up my creature attack for iAnimate. Just blocked out the ending of it so its rough, working on that right now. Hoping to complete this soon so I can work on more animation projects. Next, I'm going to work on a run cycle cause I don't like the last one that I did that's on my demo reel.  Got a cool kick and flip ninja-y looking montage clip coming up. Hopefully I can pull it off. We'll see :)

Really excited about my new demo reel. Having a great time polishing my old shots, making new ones, and just seeing all the growth I have made.

Update

It's been a crazy weekend and past few months. Some of the biggest things so far.. finished my website and demo reel (www.thomas-huynh.com), applied for Blizzard internship, and got accepted for the animation DreamCrit at college. So tomorrow, I will be going to Dreamworks Animation and get a critique on my shot.

Initially, I was thinking they could critique my demo reel but they don't want demo reels or short films. They want just one assignment and all of my assignments are like 2-5 seconds long. I don't want to show that to the person critiquing my work which I heard will be Ted Ty (he teaches the WS7 on the feature side of iA). He will probably know I attend iA due to the rigs I used and I don't want to waste his time when I could just ask my own mentors for a critique on my game related animations.

So, with 3 days left until the due date, I decided to work on my very first acting shot. I have no experience in acting as well as facial acting.  I chose to do this month's 11 Second Club dialogue that way I could enter the competition and see how I do. I was very excited to do this because I really needed an acting shot on my demo reel. The DreamCrit finally gave me the push that I needed to actually do this. I always thought it was too hard and just wanted to focus on game animation.  I mean, it definitely was hard, but do-able.

But after doing this, I found out that I quite enjoy it... a lot. I am REALLY happy with the results that I got from 3 days. I have my instructors at school to thank for that. They were all really helpful and I've learned so much from them. Here it is.

So after I get the critique from DreamWorks and my instructors, I will be fixing it up even further and submitting it. I'm going to do these 11SC competitions every month now to get practice.

Also here's a creature spawn from 1-2 weeks ago that I'm still working on as well as a boss spawn.

I've been SOOOO busy and its going to be like that for the rest of the semester. I'm loving every moment of it though. Never been so motivated, confident, and happy. I'm making a lot of progress and it feels so great.

So nervous and excited for DreamWorks tomorrow! It's going to be a great experience.

Animation Project #12: Greatsword Combo

Took reference from the latest God of War: Ascension. This one was tough... lots of mistakes on it but I want to move on to something else. I should practice and master single attacks first before I do combos again.  This was really rough :( iAnimate is starting up again this week. Really excited!! I'll be doing that as well as continuing with my own projects to keep myself super busy.
